Seth... the name given to the second son of Reivn in the series. The music lover, the quiet one, the one that is fighting an impossible battle against incredible odds. The character I am writing about today began with a different name, and that name has changed at least twice, but it somehow never seemed to fit what I saw in the character's personality and spirit. Then two weeks ago, an event happened that changed not only my own, but many other lives as well, and with it came the decision to take something beyond tragic and turn it into something beautiful.
There was a young man who befriended my son when he first started high school. He was brilliant, talented and funny... a tall, skinny kid with a head full of long blonde hair that made him look like he was more a Viking God reborn than the teenager who loved metal rock music and his bass so much. His fingers could move with such incredible grace across an instrument I had never even begun to see beauty in before I heard him play, and yet there it was. He was quiet and laid back when he wanted to be, and yet when it came to hanging out with those he loved, he was fun-loving and outgoing. There were many nights when he would show up to hang out with my son, and end up just crashing for the night. In later years, it was calls for rides to and from work and concerts as he tried to build his music career.
There were so many nights when he sat in my office listening to me read or listening to the latest musical piece I had written, or just needing a place to rest his head for the night and curling up on my sofa, that I began to look on him as one of my own sons. He had the most electrifying eyes you could ever imagine, and when he looked at you, it was as though you were looking at an incredible light that shone from inside them. If ever there was a living definition of someone who carried himself with true honor and integrity when it came to how he treated others, Seth would be that person. Yet he lived his life with a freedom few could claim. He would walk for miles just to spend time with a friend, and didn't care what the weather was. Rain or shine, summer heat or winter blizzard, it mattered not. His friends and family were more important to him. He was a gentle soul who loved video games, hanging with his friends, airsoft, and his family and friends. But most of all, he loved his music. I can still see him playing his bass and rocking his head, and in fact his whole body, in time to the beat. He was set to go on tour with his latest of many bands: Dreams of Demise. before that he was in several other bands that were a part of his journey in music, including Paradigms. But we lost him July 3rd to suicide. No one knows why and the only person who could answer that question is forever silenced.
When I began writing the character in tonight's profile, from the start he had been a music lover, a student of all things in the arts and arcane both, the one who always kept to himself, and the one who was fiercely loyal to those he called family and friends. But the name never seemed right. Now I believe he was meant to be called Seth after the remarkable young man who touched so many lives in so many incredible and beautiful ways, and who brought together a multitude of different people from all walks of life through one simple thing: love. They are very similar in nature to each other, though the book character loves a different style of music, the love is the same. I want to remember the person I knew as he was: filled with passion for his music... the one who inspired so much love in so many people. By bringing him to life here in this series, he will remain Immortal and his name will rise to join the others already here in these pages. I could write for a thousand years and still not voice all the thoughts in my head over his loss, but I know how much he loved my work, and how excited he was to find out the series would be coming to shelves soon. So the greatest gift I can give to him is to let him join those in the stories he was so fond of. He will become the second son of Reivn... Seth E. Draegon.
